Carrying Forward a Legacy of Light

Be Like Austin” is more than just a name—it is a call to action.

Founded by Carrie and Paul Stanek in honor of their son, Austin, the Be Like Austin Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the next generation of tradespeople and community leaders.

Following Austin’s unexpected passing in the fall of 2024, the Island Lake and McHenry County communities came together in an overwhelming display of love and support. To honor Austin’s memory, his family turned their profound loss into a beautiful mission: to help young adults who, like Austin, have chosen a less traditional but equally vital career path.

The Mission: Championing the Trades & First Responders

Austin was an energetic, hardworking soul who found beauty and purpose in working with his hands. He knew early on that a traditional four-year college degree wasn’t his path—and that is a path worth celebrating.

The Be Like Austin Scholarship was created to validate and financially support young adults entering vocational, trade, and first-responder careers. We believe that firefighters, mechanics, carpenters, estheticians, and plumbers are the backbone of our community, and they deserve the same backing and encouragement as university students.

Who We Support

We are looking for applicants who embody the spirit of Austin—individuals who are:

  • Passionate about a hands-on career.
  • Community-minded and eager to give back.
  • The “Light in the Room”: Someone who makes others feel welcome, valued, and happy just by being there

Selection & Application

This scholarship is open to students and young adults pursuing certification or training in the trades. We look beyond traditional metrics; we want to know:

  • What inspires your career goal?
  • What brings you joy in your chosen field?
  • What obstacles are you overcoming to achieve your dream?

Powered by Community

Every dollar raised for these scholarships comes from the heart of our community. Through our annual Sand Volleyball Tournaments and Golf Outings, we come together not just to raise funds, but to celebrate connection, kindness, and the joy of living life to the fullest—just as Austin did.
